Archipelago

The Archipelago is the central civilization of Earthsea, a vast network of islands stretching from the Inner Lands to the Outer Reaches. Its people speak the Hardic tongue, a language rooted in the Old Speech, and share a culture that values wizardry, seafaring, and the maintenance of Equilibrium. The Archipelago is not a single political entity but a collection of islands, domains, and city-states, bound by trade, common history, and the authority of the Archmage on Roke Island. It is the world from which Ged comes and to which he returns, the heartland of human civilization in a world of dragons, Old Powers, and the unknown.

Geography and Extent

The Archipelago comprises the known islands of Earthsea, from the Inmost Sea at its center to the Outer Reaches. The great island of Havnor, with its white towers, is considered the heart of the world, while the Isle of the Wise, Roke, is the seat of magical learning. The Archipelago includes the rich lands of the Inmost Sea, the wilder East Reach, the desolate West Reach, and the northern isles like Gont. Its boundaries are defined by the Open Sea to the east and west, and by the Kargad Lands to the northeast, a separate and hostile empire. The islands are diverse, from the single mountain of Gont to the crowded Ninety Isles, each with its own character and customs.

Culture and Society

Archipelagan society is hierarchical, with lords, merchants, and common folk, but it is also deeply shaped by magic. Wizards and sorcerers serve lords and townships, and their power is respected and feared. The people are predominantly copper-brown or black-skinned, with lighter-skinned individuals often having Kargish or northern ancestry. The culture is oral and musical, with chanted Deeds and Lays preserving history and legend. Seafaring is a central occupation, and trade routes connect the islands. The Archipelago is not warlike in the manner of the Kargs; its famous figures are wizards, sea-pirates, and goat-thieves, not armies.

Magic and the Balance

The practice of magic is the defining feature of Archipelagan civilization. True magic is worked through the Old Speech, the language of dragons and the making of the world. Wizards are trained on Roke Island, where the Nine Masters teach the arts of naming, summoning, changing, and weatherworking. The central principle of Archipelagan magic is Equilibrium, the balance of light and dark, life and death, good and evil. A wizard must know the true name of a thing to control it, and this power is limited by the need to name exactly and wholly. The misuse of magic, as Ged learns, can have catastrophic consequences, shaking the balance of the world.

The Role of Roke

Roke Island, the Isle of the Wise, is the spiritual and educational center of the Archipelago. The School for Wizards on Roke, housed in the Great House, is where young men from across the islands come to learn the high arts. The Nine Masters—Windkey, Hand, Herbal, Chanter, Changer, Summoner, Namer, Patterner, and Doorkeeper—govern the school, and the Archmage, the most powerful wizard in the world, resides there. Roke is protected by ancient spells, including the Roke-wind, which repels evil powers. The island itself is enchanted, with the Immanent Grove, a grove of trees that are themselves wise, and Roke Knoll, whose roots go down to the center of the earth. The authority of Roke extends across the Archipelago, and its wizards are sent to serve lords and townships, maintaining the balance and protecting against threats like dragons and Old Powers.

The Archipelago in Ged's Journey

Ged's story is a journey through the Archipelago and beyond. He begins on the island of Gont, travels to Roke for his education, serves in the Ninety Isles, and is driven across the Inmost Sea to Osskil and the East Reach. His flight from the shadow takes him to the edges of the known world, to the Open Sea where the Archipelago's power wanes. His final confrontation with the shadow occurs in a place beyond the Archipelago, a dry, dark land where the sea turns to sand. His return to the Archipelago, to Iffish and then to Gont, marks his reintegration into the world he left. The Archipelago is both the setting of his growth and the home he must defend and ultimately return to, whole and free.
